Transylvania Community Hospital to Host Prostate Cancer Screenings

BREVARD, N.C., Sept. 10, 2007—Transylvania Community Hospital has teamed up with Western Carolina Urological Associates and the American Cancer Society to conduct prostate screenings on Monday, Sept. 17, on the hospital campus in Brevard.

Dr. Barry Bodie will perform the free digital exams and will provide an optional PSA blood-screening test for $10. The screenings will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Dr. Bodie’s office. Appointments are required by calling 884-2007.

To be eligible for a screening, you must be between 50-75 years old, or 45-75 if you are African-American or have had a father or brother with prostate cancer. You must not have had a PSA test within the last year, and you must not have symptoms of or ever have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men, other than skin cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. One in every six men will get prostate cancer, and more than 27,000 men die of the disease each year in the United States. The American Cancer Society recommends that men age 50 and older get a yearly prostate cancer screening test. Men who are considered at higher risk, such as African-Americans or those who have had a close relative with prostate cancer, should begin screenings at age 45.
