Transylvania Community Hospital Names Sanders Acute Care Director

BREVARD, N.C., Jan. 31, 2008—Karen Sanders, RN, MSN, has been named the director of acute care services at Transylvania Community Hospital.

Sanders, who has 33 years of experience in nursing, will head the Brevard hospital’s medical/surgery and intensive care units. She most recently served as the practice administrator for Carolina Vascular, a vascular surgery and radiology practice in Asheville.

Sanders has extensive experience in hospital nursing management including serving 15 years in various management positions at Mission Hospitals in Asheville. She also has 11 years of experience in critical care including working at Duke University Medical Center, UNC Hospitals, the University of Virginia Medical Center and the Medical College of Virginia.

“We are delighted to have Karen on board,” said Becky Carter, chief operating officer at Transylvania Community Hospital. “Her impressive background in nursing management and critical care will be a real asset as we open our new inpatient wing this spring.”

Sanders began working for TCH on Jan. 8. She will manage the new 30-bed inpatient wing, which is under construction and slated to open to patients in late April. The 25,000-square-foot addition to the hospital will feature the largest patient rooms in western North Carolina as well as state-of-the-art patient monitoring.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for me to work with a professional, caring staff in a hospital where the emphasis is clearly on patient care,” Sanders said. “The opening of the new wing is so exciting. This new wing is so spacious and bright with natural lighting. The new rooms and nursing areas will certainly promote a healing environment and help uplift the spirits of both our patients and staff.”

Sanders received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. She earned her master’s degree in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
