Transylvania ‘Jailbirds’ Raise $11,000 for Children’s Charity
BREVARD, N.C., March 14, 2008—Fourteen of Transylvania County’s finest citizens were “jailed and bailed” on Friday, March 14, in a fundraising event that raised $11,400 for the March of Dimes.
Sheriff David Mahoney and Brevard Mayor Jimmy Harris were just a few of the community members “jailed and bailed” at the fundraiser held at Transylvania Community Hospital. The hospital and the March of Dimes sponsored the event.
Local law enforcement officers made their arrests Friday morning, and suspects were not released until each made at least $500 in bail provided by community members. All proceeds benefit the March of Dimes.
The other jailbirds included: Transylvania County commissioners Jason Chappell, Lynn Bullock and Kelvin Phillips, TCH Chief Operating Officer Becky Carter, TCH Acute Care Services Director Karen Sanders, TCH Medical Chief Dr. Carmelo Hernandez, Transylvania Schools Board Chairwoman Teresa McCall, contractor Thad Sanders, Steve Metcalf, owner of Metcalf Pharmacy, Eddie Glance with South Chase Mortgage Corp., Larry Galloway with Charlie’s Tire & Auto Service, and Shara Conley with Mountain 1st Bank. The prisoners’ lunch was provided by Subway.
The group raised $3,400 in cash and another $8,000 in pledges from community members. Last year’s Jail & Bail event raised more than $7,500. This year’s goal was $10,000 for the event.
“We are very humbled by the generosity of our community for a worthy cause that benefits children,” said Amanda Jacques, a Birthing Center nurse and the hospital’s chairperson for the March of Dimes. “We hope to raise even more funds through this fun event next year.”
Money raised will allow the March of Dimes to continue its mission of “Saving babies, together” by continuing research into the cause and prevention of premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies.
