Transylvania Sheriff, Community Members Face “Arrest” for Charity

BREVARD, N.C., March 11, 2008—Some of Transylvania County’s finest citizens will be “arrested” and “incarcerated” on Friday, March 14, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in a fundraising event to benefit the March of Dimes.

Sheriff David Mahoney and Brevard Mayor Jimmy Harris are just a few of the community members to be “jailed and bailed” at the fundraiser being held at Transylvania Community Hospital. The “Jail & Bail” event is being sponsored by the hospital and the March of Dimes.

Local law enforcement officers will make arrests Friday morning, and suspects will not be released until each makes at least $500 in bail provided by community members. All proceeds will benefit the March of Dimes.

Some of this year’s other jailbirds include: Transylvania County commissioners Jason Chappell, Lynn Bullock and Kelvin Phillips, TCH Chief Operating Officer Becky Carter, TCH Acute Care Services Director Karen Sanders, Transylvania Schools Board Chairwoman Teresa McCall and Shara Conley with Mountain 1st Bank. The prisoners’ lunch will be provided by Subway.

Last year’s Jail & Bail event raised more than $7,500. This year’s goal is $10,000 for the event.

“We are very excited to be holding the Jail & Bail event again at TCH,” said Amanda Jacques, a Birthing Center nurse and the hospital’s chairperson for the March of Dimes. “We hope the community will really get involved in this fun event that benefits children.”

Money raised will allow the March of Dimes to continue its mission of “Saving babies, together” by continuing research into the cause and prevention of premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies. To learn more about the March of Dimes or to make a donation contact the local office at (828) 258-1234. To participate in this year’s Jail & Bail event, call 883-5257.
