Transylvania Community Hospital Launches Hospitalist Program

BREVARD, N.C., Aug. 24, 2007—Transylvania Community Hospital is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Carmen Mileti, Dr. John Schaefer and Dr. Stewart Trimble as hospitalist physicians.

Dr. Mileti received her training at the Northeast Ohio University College of Medicine. She was in private practice for two years until she joined the hospitalist team at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio, where she has been since 2005.

Dr. Mileti is a native of Transylvania, Romania. She has two children ages 11 and 13 and is engaged to be married to Dr. James Kelling, a pulmonologist at Transylvania Community Hospital.

Dr. Schaefer is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Upon completing his residency at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, he worked in a community health center in an underserved area of Indianapolis. After moving to Western North Carolina in 2002, he continued working with the underserved at a community health center until transitioning to the hospitalist role in December of 2003. He has worked as a hospitalist in several facilities in Western North Carolina and enjoys serving the patients of this area.

He has one 3-year-old daughter, and he enjoys outdoor activities, record collecting and, of course, being a father. “It’s exciting to come into a start-up hospitalist program such as this one,” Dr. Schaefer said. “The energy and enthusiasm from everyone here is tremendous.”

Dr. Trimble is a graduate of the Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Ga. Upon completing his residency in internal medicine at Shands Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Fla., he moved to Western North Carolina in 2006 to serve as a hospitalist at Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville.

Before attending medical school, Dr. Trimble worked as an environmental educator at Camp Greenville in nearby Greenville County, S.C. He was also a member of the Cedar Mountain Volunteer Fire Department.

Hospitalists are doctors whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Hospitalists help manage patients through the continuum of hospital care, often seeing patients in the emergency room, following them into the critical care unit and organizing post-acute care. Any patient whose primary care physician has agreed to partner with the hospitalist physicians may participate in the hospitalist program.

Transylvania Community Hospital, located in Brevard, is a 94-bed facility fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The hospital offers comprehensive services through more than 120 active, consulting and courtesy physicians representing a full spectrum of specialties. TCH also offers support programs to increase access to healthcare and educational seminars
