Transylvania Hospital Hires New Health Educator
BREVARD, N.C., Aug. 22, 2008—Amanda Sparacino has been hired as the new health educator at Transylvania Community Hospital. Sparacino will direct and coordinate wellness programs and promotions for the 94-bed hospital in Brevard and the surrounding communities.
Sparacino was most recently a health educator for Buncombe County Schools in Asheville.
She previously worked as a Public Health Education Specialist for the Haywood County Health Department in Waynesville, where she planned and coordinated a state tobacco prevention program for six counties including Transylvania. She has also served as a health risk assessment event coordinator in Charlotte and a Public Health Education Specialist in Boone.
“We are pleased to have Amanda on board at Transylvania Community Hospital,” said Rodney Foushee, public relations and marketing manager for the hospital. “She is a health education professional who brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to promote healthy behavior changes in both individuals and populations. We are confident that Amanda can help us build on an already successful wellness program to improve the health and lives of people in our community.”
A Buncombe County native, Sparacino earned a bachelor’s degree in health education from Appalachian State University. She holds a certificate in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is working to complete a master’s degree in health education and promotions from East Carolina University.
“The Health Educator position at Transylvania Community Hospital is just the sort of challenge I have been looking for,” Sparacino said. “I get to work in a beautiful place with wonderful people all while doing what I absolutely love—helping others be as healthy as they can be. My first goal is to get the blood screenings back up and running again. Screenings and early detection are a vital component of any comprehensive health promotion program.”
Sparacino replaces Karen Stark, Transylvania Community Hospital’s wellness coordinator, who retired in May after serving patients in the area for 28 years.
