Duke Endowment Awards TCH $250,000 Grant for New Inpatient Wing
BREVARD, N.C., Dec. 7, 2007—The Duke Endowment has awarded $250,000 to Transylvania Community Hospital for its new inpatient wing, the main focus of the $14 million “More Than You Imagined” campaign. This is the largest grant they have ever awarded the Hospital. Funding from the Duke Endowment for the new inpatient wing was made possible through their healthcare division.
Key elements and strategies of the new inpatient wing building project include:
- 30 rooms for medical/surgical and critical care patients
- Room design that incorporates:
- Space designed for easy mobility, staff efficiency and greater patient comfort and safety
- Adequate space to allow family members/loved ones to stay with patients
- Higher ceilings and other design features to accommodate today’s high-tech equipment
- Standardization (rooms able to handle different levels of care, which will allow TCH to better handle fluctuations in patient census and conditions)
- A soothing, healing environment
- Four centralized nursing/physician stations, designed for greater efficiency and privacy
- Renovated/enlarged patient intake, waiting and consultation areas, designed for greater convenience and privacy (also necessary to enhance the Hospital’s ability to comply with government “HIPAA” regulations.)
So far, the TCH Foundation has raised $6 million toward their $14 million goal. To date, 52 Signature donors have contributed to name an area of the project. Another 44 donors have given over $10,000 each, along with countless other gifts of all sizes from many residents of Transylvania County who recognize how very important it is to have an up-to-date, well-equipped hospital right here in this county. “It will take many gifts of all sizes to meet our goal,” says Sharon Johnson, Executive Director of TCH Foundation. “The result will be a modern, state-of-the-art health care facility for our community.”
“TCH is a not-for-profit community hospital, which means the only funding we get is from fees received for services provided and donations,” says Johnson. Grant applications for capital funding at the Hospital are coordinated, prepared and submitted by the Foundation.
The Duke Endowment is a private foundation established in 1924 by industrialist and philanthropist James B. Duke. The Endowment’s mission is to serve the people of North Carolina and South Carolina by supporting selected programs of higher education, health care, children’s welfare, and spiritual life.
The new inpatient wing at TCH is scheduled for completion in April 2008, and the entire building project will be finished in October 2008.
