Transylvania Hospital Dietitian Wins Regional Award

BREVARD, N.C., April 8, 2008—Carrie Elmore, a registered dietitian at Transylvania Community Hospital, has won Morrison Healthcare Food Services “Clinical Nutrition Manager of the Year” award.

Elmore, who has been with Transylvania Community Hospital for a year, was chosen over more than 50 other Morrison nutrition managers of healthcare facilities in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia for the regional award. Transylvania Community Hospital contracts with Morrison, a leading provider of food services, for all meals at the hospital.

Elmore’s clinical expertise and care for the patients—particularly those with special dietary needs or concerns—as well as her close attention to detail in the planning and preparation of patient and staff meals resulted in an increase in patient satisfaction scores of more than three points in the third quarter of 2007 compared to the same period in 2006.

Elmore also serves as a patient educator in TCH’s Cardiac Rehab and Diabetes Education programs. She coordinated an employee weight management program for the hospital staff and serves on the Patient Care Council, Pharmacy, and Policy and Procedure committees. She has been a speaker for TCH’s Wellness program, “Dessert with the Doc,” and participates in the Connestee Falls Community Health Fair.

“I am so honored to be chosen as the regional clinical nutrition manager of the year and to work at Transylvania Community Hospital,” Elmore said. “I was born at this hospital and also did my undergraduate internship here. It has always been my goal to get back to TCH.”

The Transylvania County native graduated from Brevard High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in food nutrition from Appalachian State University. She earned a master’s degree in nutrition from East Carolina University and has worked at several hospitals in North Carolina including Mission Hospitals in Asheville and Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.

In addition to her duties at work, Elmore has taken the initiative to participate in community education events, including the city of Brevard’s Employee Fitness Challenge. She has also played a major role in the preparation for major hospital events including the annual Board of Trustees retreat, Chamber of Commerce events and Foundation events.

She has coordinated activities for the food service staff for regular outings, retirement and birthday celebrations. Elmore also mentored a college student in a dietary clinical internship at Transylvania Community Hospital.
