Transylvania Community Hospital to Host Diabetes Care Workshop
BREVARD, N.C., Nov. 6, 2007—“Good Diabetes Care” is the theme of an educational workshop set for Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Transylvania Community Hospital in Brevard.
The community workshop, sponsored by the TCH Diabetes Care Program, will be held in the hospital’s Sunroom from 2-3:30 p.m. Hospital healthcare professionals will give presentations on various aspects of diabetes self-management and care including Staying Active, Making Healthy Food Choices and Proper Foot Care. The free event is open to the public.
“This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the latest advancements in diabetes management and care,” said Diane Davis, TCH’s Diabetes Care Program coordinator.
The American Diabetes Association recently certified Transylvania Community Hospital’s diabetes program for three more years as meeting national standards for diabetes self-management education. “The certification process gives professionals a national standard to measure the quality of services they provide,” Davis said. “And, of course, it assures the consumer that he or she will receive high-quality service in our program.”
Nearly 21 million Americans have diabetes, with more than 4,000 people diagnosed with the disease each day. Education is considered an essential component of effective diabetes treatment by allowing patients to take more responsibility for the management of the disease. Patients with increased awareness and knowledge of the disease can often avoid hospital admission and acute complications caused by diabetes by making wise choices through self-care.
