Transylvania Community Hospital Rated in Top 20% of Hospitals Nationwide

Transylvania Community Hospital (TCH) has been recognized as a Community Value 5-Star Hospital by Cleverly and Associates, an organization that focuses on operational benchmarking and performance of hospitals in the United States.  Each year, Cleverly and Associates ranks US Hospitals based on measures of financial performance and community benefit, and awards the top twenty percent of hospitals nationwide with a prestigious 5-Star Award.  This ranking will be published in the upcoming “State of the Hospital Industry 2006 Edition,” a publication for consumers which focuses on the US acute care hospital industry.

The 5-Star Award is given to hospitals that demonstrate exceptional operational management as well as ability to contribute to the communities served.  Specifically, a Community Value Index (CVI) is analyzed, which is composed of measures that assess a hospital’s overall performance in three areas:

  1. Financial viability and facility reinvestment
  2. Hospital cost structure
  3. Hospital charge structure

Fundamentally, the CVI suggests that a hospital provides value to the community, is financially viable, is appropriately reinvesting back into the facility, maintains a fair cost structure, and has reasonable charges.

“The topic of healthcare value is increasingly being discussed, within hospitals and in the public,” said Bob Bednarek, President and CEO of TCH.  “Our guiding mission is to prioritize the provision of value to this community, with quality care, efficient operations and a focus on meeting community need.  As an organization – more than 520 employees and 150 physicians strong – we take great pride in the hard work we do everyday to ensure that this community receives excellent value from its hospital.”

“As a Board member, it is my fiduciary duty to ensure that this hospital continually acts in the best interest of this community,” stated Phillip Jerome, TCH Board Chairman. “The administrative team, staff and physicians at TCH should be commended for this well-earned recognition.  I see the extremely diligent and careful work that happens everyday at Transylvania Community Hospital, and because of that work, this community will continue to benefit from the care provided at TCH.  During my tenure on the Board, I have seen the Hospital reinvest in its facility in order to provide state-of-the-art operating rooms, an MRI service, and a new emergency room, just to name a few.  And now we are beginning a new 30-room patient wing, which is the most recent step we’ve taken to uphold our mission of providing a quality healthcare system in our community.  We continue to manage resources wisely to provide excellent facilites, technology and high-quality services, which helps make our community a magnet for outstanding physicians.  At the same time, year after year, the Hospital is able to give millions of dollars back to this community in education, screenings and charity care.  I’ve always known of the essential value TCH provides to our community – it’s nice to see a national recognition for this success.  I commend the staff at the Hospital for working daily to uphold a mission that is centered around serving this community.”

Over 3,500 hospitals nationwide were analyzed by Cleverly and Associates, and only five hospitals in North Carolina received the 5-Star Award.

Transylvania Community Hospital, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization whose basic mission is to assume a leadership role in organizing, collaborating, coordinating, and providing a quality healthcare delivery system to serve the residents of Transylvania County and surrounding areas.
