Transylvania Community Hospital Celebrates 75 Years

BREVARD, N.C., April 29, 2008—Transylvania Community Hospital will be hosting a community-wide open house to mark the hospital’s 75th anniversary and the completion of its new inpatient wing on Sunday, May 4 from 2 to 4 p.m.

The free event, which will be held on the Brevard hospital campus, will include music, cake, refreshments, giveaways, historic displays and tours of the new wing.

The 25,000 square-foot wing features 30 state-of-the-art inpatient rooms, designed with patients, their loved ones and care providers in mind. The new rooms are the largest in Western North Carolina, with special areas for visitors to dine and sleep. At the same time, high-tech monitoring equipment is standard throughout the new wing, allowing for up-to-the-second monitoring of patients’ vital signs and other medical indicators. The rooms also feature modern air control systems to isolate and prevent the spread of disease. A Wi-Fi network provides wireless Internet access to patients and visitors on the new wing and a pneumatic tube system allows hospital staff to send and receive lab specimens and medical information from the wing to the emergency department, pharmacy and laboratory.

Patients are scheduled to move into the new inpatient wing on May 12.

“I think the community will be truly impressed with this new wing and how far we have come in 75 years,” said Bob Bednarek, president and CEO of Transylvania Community Hospital. “It’s been an amazing journey when you think back that our first hospital in 1933 was in a small house on Probart Street in downtown Brevard. Now, we have a state-of-the-art medical facility. None of this would have been possible without the strong support of our local businesses and residents who have given over all the these years to make this a reality.”

The inpatient wing is the centerpiece of the hospital’s $14 million “More Than You Imagined” expansion—one of the largest in its history. The hospital completed a renovation of its cafeteria and food preparation areas last summer. And the front lobby and parking lot will also get a facelift this summer, giving the whole campus a more modern feel. So far, the TCH Foundation has raised more than $7 million toward the $14 million goal.

Sunday’s open house marks the kickoff of a weeklong celebration of the hospital’s 75th anniversary. An employee appreciation luncheon will be held at the hospital on Thursday, May 8. And the TCH Auxiliary will hold its annual community golf fundraising event at Burlingame at Sapphire Lakes on Friday, May 9, which is the hospital’s official birthday. Proceeds raised from the golf event will be used for the building project.
