Definitions of Medical Specialties

ALLERGY/CLINICAL IMMUNOLOGY

The branch of medicine dealing with disorders
due to allergy and diseases of the immune system.

ANESTHESIOLOGY

The medical specialty concerned with anesthesia.
Anesthesiologists administer various forms of
anesthesia during surgery, diagnostic procedures,
and for chronic pain management.

CARDIOLOGY

The specialty of medicine dealing with diseases
and disorders of the heart and circulatory system.

CRITICAL CARE

Specialized care delivered for patients with life-
threatening conditions in an intensive care unit
(ICU), critical care unit (CCU), and in the
emergency department prior to stabilization.
Treatment requires intensive care with continuous
monitoring.

DENTISTRY

The healing art which is concerned with the
diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the mouth,
teeth, and associated structures, and with the
restoration of function.

DERMATOLOGY

The specialty of medicine that focuses on the
diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the skin.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE

The medical specialty of providing care for
patients requiring prompt medical attention and
urgent medical evaluation and treatment.

FAMILY PRACTICE

The specialty of medicine that includes diagnosis
and treatment of disease, injury, and illness, for
patients of any age.

GASTROENTEROLOGY

A sub-specialty of internal medicine dealing with
the treatment of disorders of the digestive (gas-
troenterology or GI) system.

HEMATOLOGY

A sub-specialty of internal medicine that deals
with the study of blood and blood-forming organs.

INTERNAL MEDICINE

The specialty of medicine that includes diagnosis
and treatment of disease, injury, and illness in
adults.

NEUROLOGY

The specialty of medicine which focuses on the
diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous
system.

OBSTETRICS/GYNECOLOGY

The specialty of medicine that includes care for
women before, during, and after pregnancy and
child birth and the diagnosis and treatment of
disorders affecting the female reproductive system.

    OB: The care of women during pregnancy,
    childbirth, and the interval immediately following.

   GYN: Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the
   female reproductive organs.

ONCOLOGY

The diagnosis and management of neoplastic
diseases, particularly cancer.

OPHTHALMOLOGY

Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the eye —
including prescribing corrective lenses,
corrective/refractive surgery, and small incision cataract
surgery.

ORTHOPEDICS

Diagnosis and treatment of disorders and diseases
of the muscular and skeletal systems.

OTOLARYNGOLOGY

The branch of medicine dealing with the ear,
larynx and the upper respiratory system (ear, nose,
throat).

PATHOLOGY

The specialty of medicine dealing with changes in
the functions of the body occurring in disease.

PEDIATRICS

Detection, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of
children's diseases.

PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND
REHABILITATION


The specialty of medicine treating prolonged
impairments involving the muscle-nerve-skeletal
system.

PODIATRY

The diagnosis and treatment of foot disorders,
diseases, injuries and anatomic defects.

PULMONOLOGY

The branch of internal medicine dealing with
diseases and disorders of the lungs and respiratory
(breathing) system.

PSYCHOLOGY

The science pertaining to the mind and to behavior.

RADIOLOGY/DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING

Use of radiant energy, including x-rays, radium,
cobalt, and nuclear medicine applications in the
diagnosis and treatment of disease.

RADIATION ONCOLOGY

The application of radioactive materials to treat
tumors or diseases.

SURGERY


The diagnosis and treatment of disease by surgical
means. Physicians may provide general surgery
or be trained in surgery of a specialized part of
the anatomy such as orthopedic, ENT, or urologic
surgeries.

UROLOGY

The diagnosis and treatment of diseases or disorders
of the kidneys, bladder, ureter, urethra, and male
reproductive disorders.
