Hospital Programs & Services

 

Anesthesia Services  884-9111

TCH provides 24-hour anesthesia services, in conjunction with Asheville Anesthesiology Associates. Services
include general anesthesia, immediate availability for epidural pain blocks, pre- and post-operative pain
blocks and 24-hour epidural availability for labor and delivery.


Asthma Education 883-5322

Nearly 17 million Americans, including five million children, suffer from asthma. TCH offers asthma
education with a certified asthma educator. Call for more information.

Auxiliary Volunteers 883-5182

Since its creation in 1942, the TCH Auxiliary has enjoyed steady growth and ever increasing opportunities for volunteers to enhance the quality of care provided by the Hospital. There are currently 400 volunteers serving TCH. Added benefits of volunteering include membership luncheons, a semi-annual newsletter, free flu shots for active volunteers, an opportunity to earn service pins, and free cafeteria meals while on duty.

Birthing Center 883-5283

The Hospital offers four private and two semi-private birthing suites, which provide a home-like atmosphere during labor/delivery, and continuing through postpartum care. When possible, a newborn remains in the same room with the mother. Our specially trained mother/baby nurses provide care and education in our fully equipped level II maternity care facility and infant intensive care nursery. All newborns are offered hearing screening using Algo II testing equipment. Childbirth education classes and sibling preparation classes (for children 2-8 years old) are available on a regular basis.

Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation 883-5322

A medically supervised program of education, monitored exercise, fitness maintenance and counseling. Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab is for patients recovering from heart attack, heart surgery, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Pacemaker function clinics are offered periodically. Cardiac stress testing and Holter monitoring are available. The program is certified by the state of North Carolina and the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). A medically supervised strength training and cardiovascular program is now available to the public for a per-use or monthly fee. Physician approval is required.

Chaplain 883-5497

Spiritual support is available to patients, their families, and employees of the Hospital through our non-denominational chaplaincy program. Clergy members are available 24-hours per day.

Childbirth Preparation Classes 883-5257

Expectant parents are invited to attend a series of childbirth preparation classes taught by staff from the TCH Birthing Center. A sibling preparation class is available to help young children prepare for the new addition to the family. Classes and tours of the Birthing Center are scheduled monthly for children between 2 – 8 years old.Dr. Logan at work in the Critical Care Unit

Critical Care Services 884-9111

Our Critical and Intensive Care Unit provides close monitoring and observation of critically ill patients using state-of-the-art equipment and specially trained staff.

Community Alternatives Program For Disabled Adults CAP/DA 883-5254

Cap/DA is a program for Medicaid patients who require home care services. The program is designed to delay or prevent the need for nursing home care whenever possible.

Diabetes Care Program 883-5195

Based on national standards set by the American Diabetes Association, our Diabetes Education Program teaches diagnosed diabetics how to self-manage the disease. Personal and group classes focus on how the disease affects the body, tips on how to keep the body in balance, and methods to avoid the devastating side effects of uncontrolled diabetes. The program uses the resources of Transylvania Community Hospital to provide complete diabetes education and management.

Emergency Services 883-5243

The Emergency Department is staffed 24-hours a day, 7 days a week by physicians and nurses with specialized training in emergency medicine and trauma care. E.D. nurses and emergency support personnel offer emergency care and specific services such as breath alcohol testing and legally sensitive treatment and procedures for victims of assault. For situations beyond the scope of our services, such as severe head injury, neurosurgery or open-heart surgery, transfer to a regional medical center by medical air ambulance can occur in approximately twelve minutes.

Ethics Committee 883-5497

The Transylvania Community Ethics Committee is available to help individuals with difficult health care decisions and questions. Committee members include physicians, clergy, health care agency representatives, and attorneys. Your confidentiality is assured.

Foot Care 883-5353 or 645-6585

A registered nurse from Outpatient Rehab Services with training in intermediate foot and nail care is available to assess lower extremities and nails for problems, trims and debrides toenails, buff non-painful corns and calluses and apply emollient. Treatment includes a footwear evaluation and referrals to a primary care physician or podiatrist when needed. M-W-F by appointment.

Home Care Services 883-5254

Our Home Care Services department provides home-based services and multi-hour care to assist people to live independently at home. Medical, rehabilitative and personal care services are available. TCH home health services are offered by licensed, skilled nursing professionals, aides, and multi-hour caregivers. Home Care Services are certified by the state of North Carolina. Home Care Services offers Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Rehabilitation Therapists, Social Workers, and services such as CAP/DA (Community Alternatives Program for Disabled Adults), In-Home Supportive services, LifeLine emergency response system, and Foot Care by Home Care.

Hospice 883-5254

Hospice offers comprehensive care for terminally ill patients. The focus is on comfort rather than curative care. A support group and counseling service is available for patients and family members dealing with the dying and bereavement process.

Infant Massage Education 883-5257

Gentle Touchâ infant massage classes are available through the TCH Birthing Center. A fee is charged for the six week series of classes. Scholarships are available for families in need of financial assistance.

Kidney Stone Treatment 883-5287

Our team of staff urologists provide non-surgical removal of kidney stones in a mobile lithotripsy unit. Surgical treatment options are also available.Medical technology at it's best

Laboratory Services 883-5376

Our fully equipped medical laboratory offers blood banking, hematology, blood chemistry, and microbiology analysis by registered technologists using the most advanced laboratory equipment.


LifeLine
â Emergency Response System 883-5254

The LifeLineâ program offers a locket sized electronic personal emergency response system for those living independently. The system summons emergency assistance at the touch of a button for a low monthly charge.

Beginning at the age of 40, all women should have a screening mammogram. TCH offers both in-hospital and mobile outreach mammography services (available at various areas throughout the county). All procedures are performed by registered mammography technicians. TCH assures that all women in Transylvania County have access to low-cost breast cancer screening.

Medical/Surgical Unit  883-5237

Nurses and other health care professionals support our 40+ member medical/surgical physicians and over 60 consulting and courtesy physicians to provide comprehensive inpatient care, medical and surgical treatment, and diagnostic procedures for patients with illness, injury, or recovering from surgical procedures.

Nutrition Counseling  883-5402

Counseling is available by our registered dietician for prevention and treatment of diabetes and other nutrition-affected conditions. The TCH dietary department offers special nutrition services for patients with dysphagia or tracheotomy.

Outpatient Surgery & Diagnostics 883-5287

TCH Outpatient surgical capabilities include general surgery, special procedures, and diagnostic testing performed in three operating suites. Specialists in urology, gastroenterology, ear/nose/throat (otolaryngology), ophthalmology, orthopaedics, podiatry, and OB/GYN offer specialized surgical capabilities. Blood transfusion, urodynamics, lithotripsy, chronic pain management, radiation seed implants, and vascular surgeries are available, in addition to a variety of general surgical procedures.

Pacemaker Clinics 883-5322

Most pacemakers should be checked every three months. Medtronic, Intermedics, and other pacemaker models are assessed by appointment through the Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation Department.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation 883-5322
This program assists patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to achieve the highest functional level possible. Patients with emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma and other types of COPD benefit from programs tailored to meet their specific needs.

Radiology 883-5272

Our radiology department in cooperation with Asheville Radiology Associates provides high quality, service oriented imaging through a group of sub-specialty trained radiologists. The department offers a full range of diagnostic services including digital fluroscopy, ultrasound, nuclear medicine imaging, computed tomography (CT) screening, mobile magnetic resonance imaging (MIU), and a trauma room just 15 feet from the emergency department. A new women's imaging area houses mammography, ultrasound and bone density equipment, with ABBI stereotactic breast biopsy close by.
 

Rehab Services 883-4967

Rehabilitation services include physical, occupational and speech therapies used in the recovery or adjustment to injury, disease or debilitating conditions. Therapy emphasizes recovery to the fullest extent possible and is provided by licensed therapists and physical rehabilitation professionals. We offer:

  • Work-related injury rehab

  • Sports/orthopedic injury therapy

  • Comprehensive P.T.,O.T. speech/language therapy

  • Lymphedema therapy using the Vodder method of Combined Decongestive Therapy and Manual Lymph Drainage

  • Inpatient, outpatient and in-home services

Respiratory Therapy 883-5270

Resipratory CareRespiratory services are provided through physician referral only. Diagnostic testing and studies include pulmonary function, flow-volume loops, helium residual volume, lung diffusion, and arterial blood gas analysis and oxygen saturation studies. Nebulizer and IPPB treatments are available. Respiratory care practitioners provide inpatient and outpatient breathing consultations and teaching.

Respite Home Care 883-5254

Respite care in the home is an alternative to traditional home care. The service allows family caregivers to take a few hours off with the peace of mind of knowing that their loved one is receiving safe and quality care.

Rx Assistance 883-5002

Rx Assistance helps those in need get the prescription medications they cannot afford. This program, which
is run by the pharmacy department and many community volunteers, helps those who qualify fill out paper-
work necessary to get free medications directly from pharmaceutical companies. Grant funds are used to
purchase medications in emergency situations. Call for qualification criteria, or for more information.

Senior Health Insurance Information Program (S.H.I.I.P.) 884-2007

North Carolina Department of Insurance volunteers host monthly question and answer sessions about Medicare and Medigap insurances. Phone counseling and home visits are available upon request. An appointment is required.

Sleep Disorder Laboratory 877-6568

A new service (opened in March 2001) is the TCH Sleep Laboratory, which offers sleep disorder diagnosis and treatment recommendations in a comfortable, homelike setting. Testing is available to diagnosis conditions such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, airway obstruction, and night terrors, in addition to many other conditions that can affect a person's quality of sleep. Sleep studies and diagnostic services may be arranged through physician referral. For details, call the Sleep Lab information and appointment line at 877-6568.

Speakers Bureau 883-5383

The TCH Speakers Bureau is staffed by health care and business professionals from the hospital and surrounding community. The service is free. Please contact us 10 business days prior to your meeting to allow us time to prepare for your event.

Speech/Language Therapy 883-5275

A speech-language pathologist certified by the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) provides therapy through our Rehab Services and Home Care departments. Services are available for both children and adults.

Telemonitor Systems 883-5254

Many conditions require constant monitoring of vital health information. TCH Home Care offers an attractive option for

patients: HomMed® Telemonitors. Placed in patients' homes, these FDA-approved monitoring systems allow patients to take their own vital signs on a daily basis (such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturations, temperature and weight). All data is automatically transmitted to a central computer at TCH Home Care, where it is reviewed by qualified staff each day. Call for

Transitional Care Unit 883-5156

Caring staff at workThis in-hospital skilled nursing facility offers interim care and rehabilitation in a home-like atmosphere. Our commitment is to help residents make a smooth, healthy transition from hospital to home, or to another appropriate setting.

Wellness Programs & Services 884-2007

Our Wellness department offers monthly health screenings for a wide range of medical conditions. Special programs, seminars, support groups, and health fairs are available on a regular basis. Most programs and services are free of charge or offered at a nominal fee to cover material and testing costs. Health screening sites are offered at various locations throughout the community.

Wound Care/Ostomy & Continence Services 883-5353

The Wound/Ostomy & Continence department offers individualized care for the treatment of chronic and acute wounds and diabetic foot care. Services include incontinence (urine control) management, pre-surgical and post-surgical ostomy care and education, training and stabilization for draining systems including biliary, nephrotomy and gastrostomy tubes. Care is provided by a certified wound, ostomy and continence nurse on an inpatient, outpatient or home care basis.

WorkWell Occupational Health Network  883-5169

The WorkWell network is designed to give area employers a single source for occupational health needs. WorkWell coordinates medical services, treatment for work-related injury, work strengthening and rehabilitation therapy, physical examinations, substance abuse testing, pulmonary testing, and audiometrics. The network hosts educational seminars to keep business owners current on OSHA compliance and other employer-related issues.
